With an interest in accounting from the early days, Rylee’s desire for international experience brought him from his native New Zealand to the UK, taking up a fund services role at UBS in London in 1999. It was meeting Alan Ross at UBS, that would later go on to spark his interest in the Group.
After gaining a further 12 years’ experience in financial services sector, both in the UK and back in New Zealand, Alan approached Rylee with an opportunity to become Senior Financial Reporting Manager in our Luxembourg office. Although this meant another big move, he knew it was the right decision, reflecting “There were three clear reasons behind my move to the Group, which I now always highlight to anyone applying; Aztec don’t lose their staff, they have unrivalled client retention and by the time I joined, the Group had 10 years of impressive organic growth.”
With the regulatory environment becoming more onerous year on year, the Group identified a need for a leader who could drive the vision and direction of the Group’s compliance and risk management framework. Rylee’s broad experience in the funds industry as well as his thorough practical knowledge of the Aztec Group’s client operations, made him a natural choice for this role, and he became the Group’s Chief Risk Officer in 2013.
His in-depth background in risk, internal audit and process improvement advisory has allowed Rylee to design and implement a holistic and integrated risk management framework approach across the Group. Reflecting on how things have moved forward, Rylee comments “My team and I worked hard to find the most focused and efficient and effective solutions to strengthen our compliance and risk management culture. We now have a proactive risk and compliance team working as extension to our client-centric teams, Three Lines of Defence model and ISAE 3402 type II accreditation.”
“Our clients have the independent assurance that from a regulatory perspective their funds are in line with local regulations. It’s a comfort blanket for clients that there’s someone sitting here, albeit as an extension to the team but still independent with the specific task of making sure that each fund operates within the regulations and any potential risks are identified and effectively dealt with.”
Rylee is a certified chartered accountant (CA) and also holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree majoring in Accounting, Finance and Information Systems from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.
