We think we have the best employees in the business and we want to attract more people like them!

So, we decided to run the ultimate staff referral competition to try and find them.

A dream career – that’s a BIG promise, right? When you think about yours, what would be on your list of ideal benefits at work?

  • A total reward package that includes your base salary, healthcare, discretionary bonus and pension?
  • Tailored training and development tools, plus full support through your professional qualifications?
  • Generous annual leave allowances?
  • Work life balance?
  • A fun and exciting sports and social scene?
  • Are friendly and supportive colleagues important to you?
  • How about your very own annual summer festival with music, food, drinks and laughter?
  • Or… employee competitions where you could win a prize that’s simply out of this world? The list goes on!

The ‘dream combination’ for each person might be different, but here at the Aztec Group we’ve ticked off all the essentials and more.

We have a great team who we love to look after, and we want to find more people like them as we continue to grow. To help us find this new talent, we used our latest internal staff referral competition to seek out some bright new recruits. All our employees had to do was refer someone they knew for a role at the Aztec Group, and if that person was successfully recruited then they were automatically entered into the competition. The star prize? An all-expenses paid dream holiday (£7,500 or currency equivalent) plus 10 days additional annual leave. Second prize was pretty epic too with our runner up winning £2,500 and five days extra annual leave!

We surprised both our winner Clara, a Junior Fund Accountant in our Luxembourg office, and runner up Paul, a Business Improvement Manager in our Jersey office, whilst they were at work last month. You can watch their reaction and read about their dream holiday plans below!

So Clara, you’ve won this incredible prize just by referring someone for a role here. Have you decided where you’re going to go on your dream holiday, and who with (if anyone!)?

I know! I still can’t believe I won – it was such an amazing surprise. I’d actually forgotten the competition was ending as I made the referral back in December, so when the HR team came to my desk to surprise me and tell me I’d won it took a few moments for me to realise what was happening. I’ve always loved travelling so it really is a dream prize for me, and to make the most of it I’m taking three separate holidays. I’ve actually already taken the first one and I only found out two weeks ago! My partner, Andre, and I went to Qatar for three days last week, and we’re thinking about going to Turkey, and either Kenya or the Philippines later in the year.

Our people know better than anyone what makes a great Aztec fit. Who did you refer, and why did you think they’d fit in well here?

Actually, it was my friend who asked me for the referral! My friend Edgar was working an internship with another company but was really keen to join Aztec, and in particular our Funds business. He asked me about the company, and if I could refer him for a role he’d seen. I knew Edgar would fit in well here as he’s a friendly, super communicative and hard-working guy with a diverse background, and I was sure he would be a great addition to our multi-cultural environment in Luxembourg.

How did you go about making the referral? Was it easy?

It was super easy. I contacted HR and sent in his CV, along with the position he was interested in. HR got in touch with him directly shortly afterwards to go through the recruitment process, and he joined as a Junior Fund Administrator in Private Equity Fund Services and is loving it.

How do you describe what it’s like working here when you talk to your family and friends?

I’m originally from Brazil and have only been in Luxembourg for a year, so my family and friends are always asking me about how I’m feeling and what it’s like working here. I tell them I feel super comfortable and at home. I think working for Aztec was the best thing that could have happened to me as a new arrival in the city, not only because I like what I’m doing in my position, but also for the people. When you are apart from all your family and friends it is important to be in a place that makes you feel at ease. There are so many different nationalities working here with different experiences, cultures and languages, but everybody supports each other, so it makes it very easy to fit in and feel happy and confident. Working at Aztec has helped me grow and develop every day, not only professionally but also personally. There’s a unique environment here that makes employees feel very supported but also encourages us to reach our full potential.

Briefly describe your journey so far with Aztec. How long have you worked here and in what roles?

In Brazil, I studied administration and accounting, and moved to Luxembourg a year ago. I joined Aztec 10 months ago as a Junior Fund Accountant. The role is really interesting and I feel like I’m learning and getting better every day, and I love my team. At Aztec employees are encouraged to study for professional qualifications, and this is something I plan to explore next year.

What makes Aztec stand out from the crowd as a place to work?

The culture and the people here are special. It just feels very supportive and collaborative, which is so important especially when you are in a new country and away from your family and friends. Even though everything was new, the people were very friendly and helpful, and because there are so many nationalities and cultures in the office you feel like you fit in straight away. I love feeling that I am progressing professionally as well as growing as an individual.

You’ve won a dream holiday, but your friend is embarking on an exciting adventure too! How do they feel about starting their dream career with Aztec?

Edgar is in a different team to me but I know he has fitted in very well at Aztec. Like me he has made good work friends, and he is learning and becoming more confident with his job! I feel happy that I have played a part in helping him get his role at Aztec and start his career in Funds.

Paul, you’ve won this incredible prize just by referring someone for a role here. Have you decided where you’re going to go on your dream holiday, and who with (if anyone!)?

I still can’t quite believe I won to be honest. I’m planning on taking my wife to Sorrento in Italy for a week. This will be a fantastic holiday as we’ve been invited to a family wedding there, so I can now spend time with family without using any of my holiday allowance or money, and still have my usual holiday allowance available for a week of horse racing in York with my friends!

Our people know better than anyone what makes a great Aztec fit. Who did you refer, and why did you think they’d fit in well here?

I referred a family friend who had been working in Canada for a couple of years and just returned to Jersey. I thought he’d be a good fit as he was looking not just for a job, but for a career and I knew that Aztec would support him through any qualifications that he would need to achieve this. I thought he would love our working environment and enjoy the benefits of the social element of the company too.

How did you go about making the referral? Was it easy?

Making the referral was incredibly easy. He sent me his CV and I forwarded it to our HR Team. They confirmed that they had received it and he was invited to interview within a day or two. He was given an offer soon afterwards.

How do you describe what it’s like working here when you talk to your family and friends?

I’ve previously worked for large corporate banks so working at Aztec is very different. I always highlight that Aztec is a company that is growing fast but it’s also kept its original values. It’s a fun environment to work in, with lots of opportunities for training and career development, and fantastic social events (something which the banks I’ve worked for stopped doing years ago). As an employee you feel valued and are encouraged and supported to build a career.

Briefly describe your journey so far with Aztec. How long have you worked here and in what roles?

I’ve worked at Aztec since January 2017 as a Business Improvement Manager in Jersey. One of the most enjoyable parts of my role is that no two days are the same. I’ve had opportunities to work on a number of projects involving different people in different jurisdictions, and a wide range of product groups. There is a lot of variety in my job, which keeps things interesting. Since I joined Aztec, I’ve been fortunate enough for the company to allow me to recertify my Prince2 project management qualifications, complete a Change Management Course and several courses to support the use of applications we use in the Business Improvement Team.

What makes Aztec stand out from the crowd as a place to work?

For me, the thing that really makes Aztec stand out is that you feel well respected, recognised and rewarded in what you do day-to-day, and the company makes the time to celebrate its achievements. Just take this competition for example – where else can you win the holiday of a lifetime at work? We also have AztecFest every year, where the company brings all its employees together so we get to meet colleagues from other offices and jurisdictions. It’s a great networking and team building opportunity, and it helps reinforce our unique Aztec culture. I can’t think of any other company that does anything that comes even close to that.
