What is your favourite thing about Aztec?

For me it’s the people. It’s a real pleasure to work with colleagues, both in Guernsey and our other offices, who are passionate about their jobs and work hard to deliver a high-quality service, whilst supporting each other and having fun along the way. People are at the heart of Aztec, and from day one I was made to feel welcome and valued as an employee. Our quarterly updates, led by Aztec’s founder, and AztecFest, our summer celebration, are just some of the things that remind us that together we all contribute to the success of the business.

What is your favourite work task?

One of my favourite tasks is attending investment meetings for our clients who have a wide range of investment portfolios. During my time on these calls, I have learned about a wide variety of businesses from crypto-currency based apps, autonomous cars and steakhouses, to mobile record companies and the healthcare sector (to name just a few).

What three words would you use to describe your career at Aztec?

Rewarding, challenging (in a good way) and exciting.

What’s your favourite career tip or piece of advice?

The more you invest in your job, the more rewarding it will be. If your colleagues can see that you are hardworking, willing to learn and committed to your job then more opportunities are likely to come your way, which will help with your career progression.

What’s your favourite Aztec Academy course?

For me it’s the Manager’s Toolkit, which is rolled out to all new managers. It covers a variety of topics, including recruitment and succession planning, the appraisal process and acting as a signatory. When you become a manager you take on many new responsibilities, and the Manager’s Toolkit provides an overview of the essential skills you need to become an effective manager.

Which is your favourite day of the week?

I enjoy every single day, but I can honestly say that Mondays are my favourite! I’m a naturally positive and optimistic person, and I love working for Aztec. I have so much variety in my work that there’s never a chance to get bored, and when you enjoy what you do the days fly by.

What is your favourite thing about Aztec?

It’s hard to choose just one thing, but it would have to be prospects, on many fronts. At Aztec I’ve discovered opportunities for career evolution, training and personal development, travel, secondments to different international locations, as well as opportunities to make new friends. And it’s not limited to employees either – there are also the prospects we open up for our clients’ development by utilising our experience and stable environment.

What is your favourite career tip or piece of advice?

Respect. Everything starts with respect, especially in a multicultural environment like the one we have in Luxembourg. At Aztec Luxembourg we have more than 50 nationalities, so it’s even more important that we are respectful of others and embrace diversity. This diversity is one of our key strengths and is part of what makes us special!

Which colleague do you really admire?

My wife also works at Aztec, and I have huge respect for her and for women like her who are progressing in their careers whilst also managing family responsibilities. Seeing Kyriaki growing in Aztec and following her own path makes me very proud. Sometimes it can be strange working with your wife, but that’s also another thing that makes Aztec special. This family environment can’t be found anywhere else.

What’s been your most memorable day at work?

Last Christmas I had the opportunity to transform into Santa Claus for the ‘Little Aztecers’ Christmas party. Sharing some Christmas spirit with my colleagues’ kids and seeing the joy and excitement on their faces made this one of my most memorable days not only at work, but in my whole life.

What is the highlight of your time at Aztec so far?

The AztecFests I’ve attended have been my personal highlights. Colleagues across all of our jurisdictions come together in one place and we all just have a brilliant time celebrating the Group’s successes. They are an amazing reward for the hard work that we all put in each year.

Which is your favourite day of the week?

My favourite day of the week would have to be Friday! The atmosphere in the office is even more lively than normal and although the weekend is near, Fridays tend to be really busy and productive days. There are usually a lot of snacks around!

What is your favourite sports and social activity?

Definitely the annual quiz night! As a member of our sports and social club I’m usually involved in organising them. There’s always a massive turnout and everyone has a great time relaxing together, although the competitive spirit also runs high! We usually do a round on Aztec trivia too, which is always fun.

What is your favourite Aztec jurisdiction to visit?

I visited our Luxembourg office for a month last summer and had an absolute ball. It was my first time there and my colleagues made me feel really welcome. It was interesting to see how another jurisdiction operates, and I also loved exploring the city itself. I have several friends who I knew from the Jersey office who have moved there over the past few years, so I also got to catch up with them which was great fun!

What is your favourite career tip or piece of advice?

Don’t be afraid to ask as many questions as possible! I started at Aztec straight from school and was really nervous as the environment was very new to me. My colleagues were so welcoming and supportive, and I quickly started to feel at ease and was able to learn a lot from the people around me.

What three words would you use to describe your career at Aztec?

Meaningful, rewarding and fun.

What is your favourite thing about Aztec?

Hands down, it’s the people. I genuinely have so much respect, love and admiration for the colleagues I work with across all our offices, many of whom have become friends for life. I could do my job anywhere, but what inspires me and has kept me coming to work every day for the last nine years is the fact that no matter the challenge, I know we will conquer it together. I know it’s cheesy, but the saying “team work makes the dream work” couldn’t be more true. I see it happen every day.

What is the best thing you have learnt at work?

There are so many things I have learnt during my time at Aztec that I could probably fill a whole chapter of a book on this topic alone. If I had to choose, I would say that in life there are no problems, only challenges, and you can find a solution to even the most difficult situation. All you need to do is change your own perspective on things. Our CEO Edward shared this mindset with me when I was starting my career at Aztec, and it has become a part of my DNA, not only professionally but also in my personal life.

What is the highlight of your time at Aztec so far?

My recent relocation from London to our Luxembourg office. Saying goodbye to my London colleagues and the city itself was hard, but at the same time I was excited to jump out of my comfort zone and into the unknown, joining a fast-growing office in a place so different to London. A few months on, I can safely say that I am so glad I chose to be brave. Luxembourg is so much more than I expected, and I couldn’t have wished for a more international environment to be a part of. My new colleagues are amazing and hardworking, made up of 50 different nationalities! It’s wildly diverse. Our office is an exciting melting pot of like-minded people, all working together to provide service excellence to our clients.

Is there any particular colleague that you really admire?

James Duffield, our Head of Business Development in London, whom I had the privilege of working with for many years. The respect that people have for James both at Aztec and in the alternative investment funds industry overall is truly admirable. I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t like James, simply because he is a very kind person who is exceptional at building meaningful business relationships. Most importantly, my understanding of the British culture (including British humour!) is all down to James. Who knew he would have such an influence on me!

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

On sabbatical! I have been working at Aztec for nearly six years now, so the prospect of going on sabbatical after ten years’ service is starting to feel more real. It‘s an incredibly attractive benefit, which really highlights the community and fun side of Aztec, and it always gets the attention of prospective employees when it’s brought up in interviews. It is yet another thing that makes Aztec really stand out from the crowd as an employer.

What is your favourite sports and social activity?

Our summer celebration event, AztecFest. I think it’s fantastic that the Group brings all its employees together in one location for a team building and party day, and it really sets Aztec apart from our competitors in a big way. It’s not just about the social side either – you can see that the business really benefits too. With over 800 people spread across six geographical locations it really helps to be able to put faces to the names of the colleagues you work with and learn more about them. Long may it continue!

What is your favourite thing about your job?

I love the fact that no two days are the same. Working on a mixture of private equity and venture capital clients each day brings up new challenges, and as I have progressed from a Fund Administrator through to a Manager I have had to learn new skills and adapt along the way. Another very important aspect for me is the people that I work with. It’s essential that a team has the right mix of people who get along, have respect for each other, and work hard together towards a common goal whilst still retaining a fun element for the times when things get more challenging. Working together definitely helps us get through.

What was your favourite team trip?

Each quarter our team organises a different social event. Over the years we’ve done numerous activities including watching the horse racing at Les Landes, paddleboarding and kayaking in St Brelade’s bay, and the escape rooms at Cafe Quest, but my favourite would have to be when we went on a RIB tour to La Corbière, followed by pizza in beautiful Portelet Bay. The entire team was in good spirits and it was a great way of welcoming recent new joiners to the team.

What is your favourite thing about Aztec?

I’ve worked for Aztec for nearly three years, joining straight from sixth form. The thing that has impressed me the most is the incredible support that’s given to all employees in terms of providing structured career progression and opportunities to obtain professional qualifications. The office is a friendly environment and there’s a great sports and social scene too, so there are plenty of activities to get involved in outside of work.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

My current role involves an element of fund accountancy as well as financial systems knowledge. I lead the Guernsey team responsible for the onboarding of client data, and my favourite aspect of this is the opportunity to work with different teams and gain experience with clients in a variety of industries. Each task has its own challenges, but the key to success is always close collaboration across the whole team.

What is your favourite Aztec jurisdiction to visit?

I’ve had the opportunity to travel to many jurisdictions during my career with Aztec, but my favourite place to visit is Luxembourg. The scenery is very different from Guernsey, and there’s a far greater diversity in cultural backgrounds. Aztec is a very diverse organisation to begin with, but our Luxembourg office has the highest number of different nationalities and languages. This makes for a unique office environment which I really enjoy. It’s also a great opportunity to meet with old Guernsey colleagues who are on secondment there and eat at some of my favourite restaurants in the city.

What was your favourite team trip?

My favourite team trip is our annual festival, AztecFest. It’s always extremely well organised and great fun, bringing colleagues from all our jurisdictions together in one place. It’s a chance to meet the people we work with outside of the office environment, as well as an opportunity to get to know colleagues from the other jurisdictions who you’d never normally meet. We take part in a variety of team-building activities, which allows for some friendly competition between teams, before all getting together to celebrate with a huge party!

What’s your favourite way to unwind outside of work?

My favourite activity outside of work is socialising with friends and planning future group holidays with them. I’m also an avid gym-goer and have been training for the past couple of years with the aim of competing in local powerlifting competitions.

Name: Ryan Le Couteur

Role: Financial Reporting Manager

Location: Jersey

What is your favourite thing about Aztec?

It has to be the people! The office atmosphere is relaxed, yet everyone is committed to working together as a team in order to provide our clients with the best service possible.

What is the highlight of your time at Aztec so far?

My highlight has been progressing from Trainee to Financial Reporting Manager. Aztec has given me a clear career path from the moment I walked through the door to the present day. There’s always someone asking the question “How can you improve or develop? What tools are there available for you to achieve this?” Aztec invests so much in its employees, not just from a professional perspective but a personal one too; they’ve helped me develop and mature into the person I am today.

What three words would you use to describe your career at Aztec?

Challenging, rewarding, thriving.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

It’s the sense of responsibility that has been entrusted to me by both our clients and my management team. Having developed the knowledge and experience throughout my career to successfully manage client expectations, I’m confident when it comes to handling the relationship and providing the best service possible.

What was your favourite team trip?

An entertaining evening on a luxury yacht in St Brelade’s Bay. It was a recruitment incentive which encouraged employees to refer candidates, and if a few candidates were successful in being offered a position, their team would be rewarded with the chance to enjoy an evening on Alfie Buoy! It was such a good evening with water sports and paddleboarding being followed by an abundance of food and drinks as the sun set on our return to the harbour. It was an incredible treat, and having the chance to spend it with my team just made it so much sweeter.

Role: Financial Reporting Manager

What is your favourite work task?

I enjoy complex challenges, and as an accountant I also love using Excel! My favourite work task would have to be something which involves a fair amount of thought and planning – perhaps a carry waterfall, preferred return analysis or a deal restructure with multiple vehicles and refinancing.

What is your favourite thing about Aztec?

The people, environment and culture. When I joined Aztec in 2015, people were always talking about the Aztec culture. That meant very little to me back then, but as I settled in and became more familiar with “the Aztec way” it became second nature. It’s difficult to describe and quantify, but essentially this is what makes working at Aztec different to anywhere else, and what drives people to go that extra mile.

What three words would you use to describe your career at Aztec?

Amazing career opportunities. With the year-on-year growth that the Group has maintained for the last 18 years, there really is great opportunity for anyone with the determination and drive to progress within their career. It’s something that I have personally reaped the benefits of over the four years I’ve been here.

What is your favourite sports and social activity?

Like any true Guernsey man, the inter-island rivalry will always run deep with me, so the annual Aztec Muratti is one of my favourite sports and social events. The inaugural 2015 Muratti, where Guernsey gave Jersey a lesson in footballing by beating them 9-1, still brings a smile to many of us. As our jurisdictions continue to grow it’s been great to see both Luxembourg and Southampton enter teams in the event in recent years.

What is your favourite career tip or piece of advice?

I’ve been lucky in the opportunities I’ve been given both at Aztec and with my previous employer, but if I was to give one piece of advice it would be to gain exposure and challenge yourself in as many areas and jurisdictions as possible. This will give you the best grounding to further your career, as the skills and knowledge you’ll gain from the diverse nature of the work and jurisdictions will be invaluable.

Name: Claudio Padovan

Role: Associate Director, Compliance

Location: Luxembourg

What is your favourite thing about Aztec?

What I appreciate most about working at Aztec is the real opportunities for career and professional development it provides. Employees’ ideas and proposals are always welcomed and valued, and the Group also appreciates people who can demonstrate an ability to think outside of the box.

What is your favourite thing you have learnt at work?

I’ve learnt a lot in the four or so years that I have worked here. Probably the most important lesson is that good people, seriously committed to common goals, can achieve great things together. This is, in essence, how I would describe what Aztec has become in Luxembourg.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

It’s hard to choose, but I really appreciate the culture we have here at Aztec. Even during busier periods there is always time for smiling and joking together. Looking at myself and my colleagues, I believe that people come to work here not because they have to or because they earn a salary, but because they feel part of a team and culture which values and supports them, which is rewarding in itself.

What’s your favourite way to unwind outside of work?

Most of my time outside the office is dedicated to my family, and to having fun with my three lovely children. I also enjoy wood crafting, which is a hobby I have pursued for many years.

What’s your favourite career tip or piece of advice?

If you want to learn a lot, learn it fast, and have opportunities for training, development and career progression, then Aztec is the place for you. I’d highly recommend it to people that are motivated and looking to build a career, not just a job.
