Aztec employees shine at the 2019 Island Games

Last month, six employees from our Channel Islands offices took part in the 2019 Island Games in Gibraltar! Competing in individual and team events, including cycling, table tennis and athletics, our employees brought home a whopping eight medals!

The Island Games, first held in 1985 on the Isle of Man, are also widely known as the ‘friendly-games’. The international event takes place every two years, and brings together over 2,000 athletes from 24 islands, who compete in various events on individual and team basis.

Among those competing in this year’s event were six employees from our Jersey and Guernsey offices. Each and every one achieved fantastic results, with many personal bests and medals proudly coming to the home islands.

Congratulations to all participants on their amazing achievements! See below for their individual experiences.

Jack Mills – table tennis, Jersey senior fund accountant

Jack competed in table tennis events (men’s singles and doubles, mixed doubles and team event) and with his team won their first Silver medal since 2011!

Maddie Wilson – cycling, Guernsey client relationship manager

Maddie had an undeniably successful event, bringing home three team Bronze medals! She took part in the Town Centre Criterium, Time Trial and Road Race individual and team event, and is delighted with the results.

Jack Rebours – cycling, Jersey trainee fund administrator

Jack competed in three cycling events; the Town Centre Criterium, Time Trial and Road Race, in which he placed 11th, 7th and 9th respectively. Jack and his teammates were pleased to finish the week by picking up a Bronze medal in the Men’s Team Road Race competition, having managed to place three riders inside the top 10 (6th, 7th and 9th).

Sarah Mercier – athletics, Guernsey financial reporting manager

Sarah competed in the women’s athletics 5,000m and 10,000m and snapped up Gold in both events, completing the gruelling 10,000m in 37min47 sec and the 5,000m in 17min16sec! Sarah has achieved incredible results and is taking some well-deserved rest.

Samuel Maher – athletics, Jersey fund accountant

This was Sam’s third time competing in the Island Games and he’s put in a great effort in the men’s athletics 800m and 1,500m races.

Joshua Stacey – table tennis, Guernsey fund accountant

Josh took part in the table tennis events (men’s singles and doubles, mixed doubles and team) and was pleased to bring home the Gold in the team event in a sweet victory against the rival Jersey team. Josh also reached the quarter-final of the men’s singles which was a personal best for him since he got knocked out in the first round in previous events in Gotland and Jersey.

The next Island Games will take place in 2021 in Guernsey.
