Matt Costen,
Associate Director

Private Equity, UK

In his role as Associate Director, Matt is responsible for overseeing a team of Financial Reporting Mangers and plays a key role in the strategic planning and structuring of the team to support our private equity clients.

As well as supporting the team with their day-to-day work and providing advice and guidance on how to implement and adhere to best practice, he also assists the Business Development team with proposals and prospective client meetings.

Background and experience

Appointed Associate Director in 2021, Matt joined the Aztec Group in 2013 as a Depositary Accountant working to provide depositary services to clients in accordance with the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive. In 2015, Matt transferred to work in a team providing fund administration services to onshore Direct Private Equity clients, and became Financial Reporting Manager in 2017.

After graduating from the University of Southampton, Matt trained at PricewaterhouseCoopers and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in January 2010. Through this work, Matt provided internal and external audit services to a number of large private sector and public sector clients. He then spent three years in education, teaching a mixed-ability Year 5 and 6 class, before returning to accountancy in October 2013.

  • Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) – Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales
  • M-Level PGCE (Primary) – University of Southampton
  • MEng Environmental Engineering and Engineering Management – University of Southampton

Outside of the office

Matt enjoys completing escape rooms, going on long walks, travelling the world, and, having played various roles from a Pantomime villain to George from Blackadder Goes Forth, amateur dramatics. He also had a passion for singing songs in the style of Cher.
